Statement

Marcel Duchamp introduced to the art world the concept of the readymade. It was used as a metaphor for the Artefact (i.e. The Fountain 1917 where the urinal was no longer a functioning urinal but an aesthetic object). It was placed in the context of the gallery and was to be viewed in the same way as one might view a sculpture.

My sculptures both domestic and musical function as the object they represent, but also as a metaphor for the human condition. The objects can be easily identified from their initial source, i.e. the urinal is still a urinal, a violin still a violin, and a plug a plug, but through the casting process they have been transformed into a new reality, that of sculpture.

This work reflects the state a person gets to once their initial condition changes, whether the cause is physical, mental or debilitating.

How do we, as the viewer, relate to the changes in any individual that has gone through such a change? Do we react as if they are broken, or should we see them evolving or metamorphosing into a new dynamic persona?

My sculptures highlight this point and are perfect for a public setting, but they add a sensitive poignancy in that change and difference also have an aesthetic presence, one of beauty! This relates to how change, evolution or the metamorphosis of an individual can be a positive thing – like the pupae to the butterfly.
